Like everywhere in the world, Covid-19 has affected Mayan Riviera travel, and our community generally. But authorities think we are in our peak and are looking toward the future and our collective new-normal.
Current Situation (July 2020)
In July, our area remains in Orange status. This has allowed restaurants and snorkel/fishing tours to operate at 30 percent. Masks are still required, as is social distancing, and beaches remain technically closed. But, we are seeing airlines beginning to schedule more flights in July. We are hoping to be in Yellow status soon allowing operations to move to 60 percent, and the beaches to open. But, a late June trend indicating higher cases in the State has threatened this status. The Governor has indicated he will return to Red if cases continue on an increasing trend and people are see not practicing social distancing and mask requirements.
Make no mistake, the area, and Puerto Morelos in particular, have taken recommendations seriously, and adhering to them. This has resulted in very few recorded infections in Puerto Morelos.
Our small businesses have done everything they can to weather this storm. Many have done so while continuing to serve the community with delivery and take-out. And now with some opening outside terraces and limited indoor dining. The government has been doing a good job providing food boxes to all of the locals. Two robust food bank operations also continue to support those the government program may have missed.
