Is it safe to stay in vacation rentals? During the Covid crisis, it is difficult enough to fly on an airplane. But there are also questions on other aspects of travel. Once I get there, how safe is the hotel or vacation rental I’m using?
There’s an article from CNN on June 23, 2020 that provides some great advice in this area! To sum it up, you should practice what you do at home. This includes washing hands, wearing masks when out, social distancing, and wiping down high-touch surfaces. You should also look for cleaning commitments from your hotel or vacation rental. If you don’t see them, call and ask them before you book.
The Vacation Home Rental Association as well as major platforms like AirBnB and HomeAway (VRBO) have published cleaning guidelines that meet or exceed CDC guidelines. Some of the platforms also quiz hosts on the cleaning handbook, and require a commitment from the hosts to follow the guidelines.
So, is it safe to stay in vacation rentals? At Las Casitas, we have made those commitments and follow extensive checklists when cleaning our villas. They include:
Except in circumstances of existing reservations that cannot change (and those guests are notified), we separate check-in and check-out of guests by at least 24 hours.
Our Housekeepers prepare themselves with masks and gloves before entering any villa or casita. We provide our housekeepers with proper chemicals and equipment for effective cleaning.
Housekeepers first conduct all cleaning, dusting, mopping, windows, linen removal and washing, etc. through the entire unit.
Housekeepers then spray all high touch surfaces, such as counters, drawer and door knobs, bathroom fixtures, seating and sleeping surfaces, etc. with appropriate disinfectants and allowed to air dry.
The housekeeper then changes gloves, and proceeds to make the beds and perform final touches on the villa or casita.
In addition to the above measures, we also use a nebulizer disinfectant system to cover the entire villa or casita with additional protection from many different viruses, fungi and bacteria. These systems are highly recommended by the CDC and others due to their effectiveness, and we are happy to employ them as an added degree of safety.
The housekeepers work is then checked. We also ensure there are additional supplies of disinfectant, paper towels, hand sanitizer, etc. for use by our guests.
CLEANING DURING YOUR STAY
While Las Casitas offers everyone one complimentary cleaning during a 7 day stay, we would recommend opting out of that amenity. However, if you desire to use it, we require all guests to vacate the property at least 3 hours prior to our housekeepers entering. Guests should expect another three hours for the cleaning, as well as additional time before re-entry. So this is an all-day affair for our guests that could be inconvenient, but for good reason. Every villa and casita has a washer and dryer for guest use, as well as ample cleaning supplies.
SO, IS IT SAFE?
While no one can provide guarantees, and everyone has their own level of comfort, generally, you can rest assured that Las Casitas is doing everything possible to ensure a clean, sanitary environment for you. Whether you choose to stay with us, or another vacation rental or hotel, you should ensure they are meeting both these, and your, cleaning expectations.
